The Big Change is Here

Hello everyone. I’ve been so caught up in my recent projects that I let a whole month go by without informing you of anything. So, let’s get caught up.

First, and most importantly, I finished creating my new website, http://kaysmithmusic.com. This means that everything, including my blog posts has shifted over to that new website. Not to worry though, this website will still be up for a time; just know that it will slowly die of to integrate to the new website. Another way to put it, is this website will slowly become just another hoop to jump to get to the new website.

Some might wonder, why make the change at all, and why change the name? Well, first off, the new website is on a new website building system. The system is way more flexible than this one, which allows me to make it look almost exactly how I picture it. The slight change of name is because after many hours of research, I learned that it was a branding scheme to have the same name across all social platforms. Kayla Smith is a pretty popular name and therefore has been used. Ironically, at least in my opinion, Kay Smith Music was not so popular. So, I jumped on the bandwagon and made sure that my facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Website were all Kay Smith Music (yes, I caved in to getting Twitter and Instagram). You can get to my new website by hitting the image below.

In the meantime, I have been working on a few other projects. The first is I’m working on creating an online flute course. One snag is that I can not stand the look my computer camera creates, so I should invest in a quality camera. The second project is putting together a set list of music to create a recital and an album. The third project and probably furthest from coming to fruition, is creating a YouTube music video. But, slow and steady wins the race.

A Possible Change to This Blog (You make the difference)

Hello everyone, as I do more research to how many musicians handle their blogs and I take a look at my own, I notice quite a few differences. As I am working on my brand new website, I am thinking about reworking my blog. News updates will stay, but other categories will stay based on how much you, as a community want them. Right now, you can take a poll to voice what categories you want to keep or add. This poll will be up for the remainder of the month.

April Report

March came to a close last week, and I’ll I could think of is they don’t call it March madness for nothing. All but one of my weekends was busy with workshops, performances, and social events. I hope to have more relaxing weekends this month, but that’s not going to stop me from working on my business.

The Ah Tempo Flutes performances on the 23rd went well. Both retirement homes enjoyed our company and would love to have the group back. We as a group enjoyed performing for others, but since they were private events, we didn’t really get pictures.

On another note, I made an investment during March. As much as I hate spending money, I purchased a new computer. Though my old one is still functional, a ten year old computer is not really compatible with some of the business things I have planned.

Speaking of which, my new website, that I hope to integrate this one to, is well under way. I made the choice to switch to something that I have a little more control, like ads.

Finally, I look forward to some of your ideas. I blog my opinions on music topics, reviews on artists or music items, facts, and informational things that may be useful to those in the music world. So, feel free to send your ideas either through my contact page or by leaving your thoughts in the comments. Thank you.

March Message

What a crazy month it has been, between the historical snowfall and sudden changes with my day job. It did allow me to sit down and work on the logistics of my personal business. Though I do not have substantial news yet, I will provide some updates that occurred as well as significant dates to look forward to.

First off, I finally started experimenting with recording. Though I feel I have got to spend more time with this before I put anything out in public, it is a step forward toward my goals of bringing music of all ages and cultures to an engaged audience of all ages (specifically the younger crowd).

I’ve also been working on expanding my flute studio. Not only am I trying to connect with people in the local area, but I have been seriously contemplating on putting together a teaching course that I might put up on a site like “teachable.” I have my doubts about the benefits of online flute teaching, however it would probably have a similar effect to if I were teaching a classroom full of flute players. You can let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Ah Tempo Flutes is set to perform live on the 23rd this month. Even though it is a private event, we will see if we can get photos/videos.

Finally, I look forward to some of your ideas. I blog my opinions on music topics, reviews on artists or music items, facts, and informational things that may be useful to those in the music world. So, feel free to send your ideas either through my contact page or by leaving your thoughts in the comments. Thank you.

February Briefing

Well, the polls are in. What you see in the upper left hand corner of the website, is essentially the logo that was voted on. Though logos may change, this one will serve me for the time being.

On some other news, Ah Tempo Flutes has started rehearsing again. Conducting for the Christmas gig was such a success, that the group has asked me to conduct again. We are aiming for a performance in March, where I will conduct four movements of Holst’s “The Planets.” Keep updated for future announcements.

Finally, I look forward to some of your ideas. I blog my opinions on music topics, reviews on artists or music items, facts, and informational things that may be useful to those in the music world. So, feel free to send your ideas either through my contact page or by leaving your thoughts in the comments. Thank you.

January Announcements

Here’s to the first post of the new year, those that celebrate the new year on January 1st that is. I am very excited to see how this year unfolds. So, I will first review what happened last month, and then go into changes that you will likely see this month.

December’s Performance with Ah Tempo Flutes was a lot of fun. It was great to not only get to play some Christmas music, but also to conduct some of the pieces. You can check out some photos on my Instagram page.

Some of you are aware that I tried to make a holiday music video. Little did I realize, I missed a few very important steps along the way. However, this is all new to me, and it is only human to make some mistakes along the way. For that is how we learn and grow. However, that does not mean I have given up on making videos. I plan to get out at least one this year, if not three. So keep an eye out for future announcements.

One thing I have noticed with a lot of successful entrepreneurs is that they have a logo. Some are homemade, some are professionally done, and some change over time. I have put up a poll with a few ideas. It would help me greatly to get your opinions. Just be aware, that they are very rough sketches.

Since I’m trying to keep my business name the same across all platforms, and allowing room for my website to grow, I may be switching programs and hosts. This means that I may end up with a new URL as well. Though I will keep this website up as well for some time, be on the lookout for kaysmithmusic.com announcements.

Finally, I look forward to some of your ideas. I blog my opinions on music topics, reviews on artists or music items, facts, or informational things that may be useful to those in the music world. So, feel free to send your ideas either through my contact page or by leaving your thoughts in the comments. Thank you.

December Disclosure

It is that time of year where the holiday cheer brings chaos, joy, and happiness. With that, here are a few things that are planned for Kayla Smith Music this December:

1. Blogging
I have come to realize that I enjoy blogging. I try to go through a cycle of the following categories: Opinions, Music Trivia, Reviews, Informational, and the beginning month news. If you are curious about anything that would fit in any of these categories, feel free to leave a message or comment.

2. Ah Tempos
Ah Tempos flute choir is performing December 16th, 1:00pm at Molbak’s, which you can get directions here. So, if you’re in the area, feel free to stop by for a listen while doing some holiday shopping.

3. Music Video
I am finding that making a music video is very challenging. Especially because I have never done anything like this before and I’m doing it by myself. It does not help that I’m a bit of a perfectionist, but I will have to let some things go. I pretty much have the arrangement done. Now I need to record, film, and edit quickly if I am to get this out before the 25th. I am excited, yet really nervous.

Thanks for your support. Feel free to give a like and comment below.

November News

These past few weeks have been busy with my school job. When they told me that their veteran’s day assembly was a huge deal, they weren’t kidding. That has not stopped me from working on my studio projects though. So, here is the update:

1. Blogging
Blogging will continue to be uploaded weekly. I know that most successful blogs post daily, but I don’t have that kind of time.

2. Website
Some might have noticed that the background coloring on my website, particularly the homepage, has a new color. I haven’t decided whether I like this blue color or a grayish purple color. Feel free to let me know your thoughts.

3. Ah Tempo’s
Ah Tempo’s flute choir has decided to postpone any recording for the time being. On the other hand, the group has decided to experiment with having conductors for our holiday performances in December. I and one other member will be the conductors.

4. Music Video
I have been working on a holiday music video. Right now I have been working on the arranging part of it. It has proven difficult because I do not have much arranging experience and virtually none for a solo instrument. However, I haven’t given up yet. I hope to have a video ready before the end of the holiday season.

Thank you for keeping up to date with my studio progress.

Projects Underway this October

Starting this month, I am working on projects either by myself or as a group that will hopefully help this business grow.

1. Blogging
Blog posts are still coming out weekly. Feel free to give likes and comments on them.

2. Growing My Private Studio
I am working on building Kayla Smith Music’s private flute studio by booking clinicians at various schools and working with students. We will see if it works out.

3. Ah Tempos is Recording
The flute choir I am a part of, Ah Tempos, is working on polishing some songs for recording. We will likely put them on soundcloud. What’s also exciting about it, is I might be conducting one of the pieces.

4. Holiday Music Video Underway
I am working on arranging some holiday music, recording it, filming, and editing it into a music video. This will be a whole new experience so I will be learning a lot and keeping you informed along the way.

So, I am working on four projects that should be finishing sporadically throughout the next few months. So, please stay tuned for any updates.

What’s New This September

Welcome to the new look. Thank you to those who gave their thoughts and votes for the website look. The new look seems favorable to most.

On another note, schools are starting up again and while I will still be teaching elementary music in the same area, it will be a new school in a new district. So, welcome back to the new school year students and teachers.
